A number of years ago, my family was involved for a while in a church plant. Due to some differences in vision and priority, my parents told the founding pastor that they were planning on leaving the church and moving on. The pastor, who generally was an OK guy, then made this strange comment: “so what are you going to do now? Go worship in the woods?”
Interestingly enough, that comment stuck with us all these years, and we actually realized that we DID want to go worship in the woods! So, after far too long of a delay, yesterday after church my father and brother, along with my fellow prophetic arts team leader, went to Armstrong Redwoods State Park to — you guessed it — worship in the woods!
It was awesome. There’s a certain “magical” quality about being in fellowship and communion with God and with His created order at the same time. When you’re in a building, you’re looking at what man’s created. When you’re in nature, you’re looking at what the Creator has created.
I want to worship in the woods again!

Hey Jared,
Sound like it was a great time. During my former pastorate, several of the men in the church would go on a weekend camping trip every summer. It was a great time to do just as you said, worship God. We built a campfire and about 20 of us guys would sit around it singing and sharing in the things of the Lord. Those were good times!

[...] I found this post while following links around on a completely different subject. I’d like to commend it to worship leaders. It would be good for the leaders themselves, but it would also be good for some of the church members as well. [...]
