How soverign is soverign?

I blogged quite a while back that I was planning to start a series of theological study on the nature of God’s sovereignty, and I haven’t forgotten that pledge nor have I chosen to revoke it. However, I simply haven’t posted anything about it because…it is completely bamboozling me! I think the question of what it means to say that God is sovereign is probably the most baffling and controversial topic of Christian theology, followed closely by the discussion of if and how God speaks to humans today (as opposed to Biblical times).

For now, I’ll only post one thought that’s been ping-ponging around my head, and it’s a quote I heard from somewhere that I’m afraid I can’t find the source of, which is this:

God is so sovereign that he can choose to appear at times to be “un-sovereign.”

See John 10:18 for an interesting parallel to this sentiment.

IF GOD IS TRULY SOVEREIGN IN ALL THINGS HE IS SOVEREIGN IN THE SALVATION OF SINNERS AND NO MAN CAN BOAST OF GETTING SAVED BY BELIEVING IN JESUS OR CHOOSING GOD,GOD HAS SAID YOU HAVE NOT CHOSEN ME I HAVE CHOSEN YOU. IF GOD BE FIRST ,SALVATION TRULY IS OF GOD ALONE A GLORIOUS GIFT . FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED.

It is a two-way process, my friend. God reaches out to us, calls us, draws us — but we must choose to respond to His call or to reject His call. In fact, that isn’t just true once, but it’s true every single day. Every day I must chose to follow Jesus. Every day I must chose to obey His Word. Every day I must surrender my life to God and allow His will and purpose to be the foundation of my life.

Absolutely it’s by the grace of God that I’m even able to do this, and I agree that no man should boast in his own strength. It is only by the Holy Spirit that we are able to walk the path that Christ walked.
