You know the saying about how hunger is the best sauce? It’s true. I’m telling you — a simple bite of fruit or a piece of cheese or a hunk of bread after coming out of a fast will taste like the most delectable morsel ever.
And so it is with our relationship with God and the intimacy we can have through the power of the Holy Spirit. I’ve heard atheists claim that they’ve called out to God, called out to Jesus, and didn’t receive any answer, so that’s that: God doesn’t exist, Jesus is a myth, we’re all alone here in our little material plane.
Not receiving an answer doesn’t prove God doesn’t exist. All it proves is that God gave you the very outcome you expected: silence. Because if you really hunger after God, you will chase after God with your entire body, soul, and spirit until you find Him.
God loves hungry people. God loves desperate people. You know, I want my legacy as a human being to be one where people say: “There was a man who was really hungry, a man who was desperate to know more of God.” I don’t care about fame, I don’t care about wealth, I don’t care about prestige, I don’t care about having a good reputation among the “in” crowd. If God is real, if the God of the Bible is real, if Jesus Christ is real, then He is the most precious thing in the world and worth chasing after. Since I’m a single guy, I think of the most romantic image of chasing after a beautiful woman, of getting to know her every personality detail, of understanding what makes her tick, of anticipating her next idea, of loving her reaction when I give her something nice, of just sitting down with her and listening to her inmost thoughts and desires. If you’re a woman, think of that one man whom you want to be completely intimate with on a level far beyond just sex. Maybe he’s your husband and you’ve been married for fifty years — there’s still more to him than you know.
True romance can only come from a place where your number one desire is to cherish that special someone who is the only one capable of filling the void that gnaws in your heart.
Some people treat God like He’s some kind of laboratory animal that can be experimented on and discarded if He doesn’t fit the purpose. God isn’t something to be grasped, God is someone to be loved. You don’t treat a loved one like the object of a scientific study. You treat a loved one like a person. You cherish them, revere them. You would do anything for them. You live for them, and you would die for them. They are more important than yourself.
God is the most incredible, amazing, and glorious Someone you can ever love. And He is reaching out to people who are hungry to know His person, who are desperate to hear His voice. God loves everyone unconditionally, yet I believe that love is available to you only to the degree that you seek after it. The hand’s been dealt — now are you willing to play it? God’s knocking at the door — now are you willing to open it? His unconditional love is upon you — now are you willing to die for it?
