When I first started seeing creative artistic expression (besides just just usual music band) as part of worship services in churches, I was amazed. In the past few years, I’ve seen people dancing, people waving flags and banners, people painting (!) live on stage during the worship time, and people receiving prophetic songs from heaven to sing solo for the edification of the church. It’s truly inspiring to see love of God and love of the arts overlapping in such profound ways.
As an artistic person myself, I’d always wondered why “church” was such a dull place without room for passionate creativity. In addition, we shouldn’t be trying to copy what was popular in the mainstream ten years ago — we should be defining now what the mainstream will finally discover is good ten years later. Hundreds of years ago, Christians used to be at the forefront of culture in the West. Why do we allow ourselves today to be content in our own little “Christian ghetto” when the world desperately needs true creative leadership in the arts?
Thankfully, many churches are starting to receive divine commissions to move to the forefront of creative development. I believe that Grace Fellowship, the church I’m a part of, is moving in that direction as well, which is very exciting. First step: get that Web site up and running! (I’m the Webmaster currently, so we’re in the middle of an entire overhaul which I hope will be ready soon. Yay!)
